Extra DUI patrols have started as the holidays approach and will continue through January 1st, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
According to The Olympian, a joint DUI emphasis patrol led by the Washington State Patrol will take place in recognition of the Night of 1000 Stars, which symbolizes the badges of the many officers who are out keeping the roadways safe.
Preliminary Fatality Analysis Reporting data shows more than 500 traffic deaths in the state so far in 2015, nearly 100 more reported deaths than this time last year.
“We have seen an unfortunate increase in traffic deaths this year,” said Darrin Grondel, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
“By encouraging people to plan ahead over the holiday party season, and to ensure a sober ride home, we hope our state will experience zero traffic deaths in December and through the New Year.”
