Extra DUI Patrols in Effect in Pierce County Through End of Year

According to The News Tribune, additional officers will be patrolling Pierce County roads for intoxicated drivers through January 1st as part of a statewide holiday emphasis patrol.

In a new partnership this year, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission joined with Uber to offer $20 off a participant’s first ride in areas where the DUI enforcement is operating and Uber works.

Participating are officers from Bonney Lake, DuPont, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Milton, Puyallup, Steilacoom, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place, in addition to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the Washington State Patrol and the state Liquor Control Board.

“We know in Pierce County that drivers have been increasingly stepping up their game to not get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking or drugging,” Fife police Sgt. Kevin Farris said. “We’re counting on that trend continuing.”

The patrols are part of the Traffic Safety Commission’s Target Zero initiative, which aims to have no DUIs by 2030.
