Rollovers and Crashes Plague Seafair Weekend

According to the Seattle PI, several serious crashes occurred in King County throughout Seafair weekend, shutting down lanes in busy thoroughfares.  The incidents included a motorcycle fatality and five rollovers that took place within hours of each other Sunday morning.

The Seattle PI notes the following incidents:

-A 34-year-old Seattle man was killed Saturday afternoon after crashing on Interstate 5 just south of state Route 599 in the Tukwila area.

The man was driving a Yamaha motorcycle north on the freeway about 3:45 p.m. when the bike left the roadway to the right and struck a barrier, according to State Patrol reports.

The man was ejected from the motorcycle and declared dead at the scene. He had a motorcycle endorsement and wore the proper head protection, reports say.

Investigators believe high speed was a factor in the crash.

-Six patients were taken to Harborview Medical Center early Sunday after a rollover on I-5 near Lake City Way that investigators believe included alcohol influence.

A 23-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Impala was traveling north on the freeway about 3 a.m. when the car left the roadway to the right and struck a guard rail.

The impact caused the sedan to roll over and come to a rest on its top. Multiple witnesses told troopers that the vehicle was traveling at 80 to 90 mph before swerving and losing control.

The driver and five passengers – a 22-year-old man and woman, 27-year-old man and woman and a 21-year-old man – were taken to Harborview. One occupant was initially trapped in the vehicle, reports say, but ultimately rescued.

Troopers recommend vehicular assault charges against the driver, according to State Patrol reports.

-An 18-year-old driver of a Toyota Rav-4 was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault Sunday morning after the vehicle rolled over on I-5 early Sunday morning near the Mercer Street exit.

The vehicle was headed north on the freeway about 5:21 a.m. and left the roadway, striking the jersey barrier and rolling over, coming to rest on its top.

The driver and its four passengers, men ages 19, 20, 21 and 22, were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The State Patrol believes drugs or alcohol were involved.

-A 35-year-old driver was arrested for investigation of DUI Sunday morning after rolling over his truck on state Route 18 between Auburn and Covington.

The incident occurred about 9:45 a.m. just east of 304th Street, reports indicate.

No serious injuries resulted from the crash, but witnesses told investigators the driver of the pickup intentionally brake-checked another driver, causing a rear-end collision and the rollover.

-A pregnant woman was taken to Harborview for evaluation after a three-car collision on I-5 over the Duwamish River just south of Seattle.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m., resulted in the blocking of the three left lanes during the investigation.

No one was seriously injured and the crash was not drug- or alcohol-related.

-Four people were injured in a two-car collision Sunday night just west of Renton.

A Lexus sedan driven by a 27-year-old Issaquah man was traveling east on state Route 900 about 7:30 p.m. when it crossed the centerline and hit a Honda Accord traveling the opposite direction head-on. A 43-year-old man, 30-year-old woman and 2-year-old girl in the Honda were injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center.
