According to KOMO News, a collision involving a box truck, car and RV on Interstate 5 at Federal Way sent two people to the hospital on afternoon of August 18th, officials said.

State troopers and medics rushed to the accident scene, at southbound I-5 near Enchanted Parkway, at about 12:50 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of a serious crash involving three vehicles.

Officials said the motorhome smashed into the back of a red car, which in turn was shoved underneath the box truck where a fire broke out.

“The red car was actually completely on fire,” said witness Veronica Cook. “And people were running to it with fire extinguishers.”

The driver of the red car managed to get out of the wreckage, but a female passenger remained trapped inside, according to troopers. Crews had to extricate her after those drivers got the fire out, and she was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was listed in critical condition.

“Honestly the people that probably saved the passenger, so many people stopped becuse the car was on fire,” said Matt Wicks. “People stopped with fire extinguishers and got the fire out before something really bad happened.”

The driver was also taken to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

The crash blocked nearly all lanes of I-5 south for several hours, creating a several-mile backup. It was the second major crash on I-5 in the South Sound Thursday — traffic was still recovering from an earlier crash where a tanker truck hauling fuel overturned on an I-5 offramp, forcing I-5 to close near Fife for three hours as crews made sure the flammable cargo was safe.

In fact, investigators are still looking into whether the slowdown from the Fife crash was the trigger for the crash in Federal Way. Troopers say it doesn’t appear the driver of the RV was impaired, but they are investigating whether that driver was going too fast and didn’t stop in time when traffic stopped for the Fife backup.

“There was a car in between the motorhome and the red car that dove out of the way because they saw the motorhome coming,” said Trooper Rick Johnson. “The motorhome then struck the red car and pushed it into the box truck.”

Troopers haven’t said if anyone was cited or if there were any other injuries.
