Generally speaking, misdemeanor crimes in the State of Washington are considered lesser crimes and are less serious in nature than felony crimes.  However, being charged with a misdemeanor is still serious and should be taken as such.  In Washington, there are two categories of misdemeanor crimes – gross misdemeanors and misdemeanors.  Gross misdemeanors include a penalty of up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000.  Misdemeanors, by contrast, include a penalty of up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.  It is possible for a criminal defense attorney to negotiate with the District Attorney to have your charges dismissed.  Another alternative to misdemeanor charges can be a “civil compromise,” which is a case where the victim of the crime is willing to testify that they have received satisfaction for their injury and the court stays or dismisses the charges.  Examples of misdemeanor charges include petty theft and negligent driving.
